A new city needed a protector, so Athena and Poseidon each offered a gift. Poseidon struck the ground and a spring appeared, but its water was too salty to drink. Athena planted a small olive tree. It did not look powerful, and at first some people laughed.

Athena explained that the tree would provide food, oil, wood, and shade for many years. The citizens had to choose between sudden power and patient growth. They chose the olive tree and named their city for Athena. Families learned to press the fruit and plant new trees on dry hills. The first tree also gave travelers a cool place to rest at noon. As a result, the quiet gift became a sign of wisdom rather than war.
